Personal Essentials Ministry Update

2018 saw the launch of the Personal Essentials Ministry, one of the newest Missions ministries at Manchester United Methodist Church. We began the year with a pilot program where we committed to providing specified quantities of five items each month: 3,600 rolls of toilet paper, 600 bottles of shampoo, 360 boxes of 36 count tampons, 600 packs of 4 count razors, and 600 cans of shaving cream. This was an ambitious goal as we set out to support dignity and hope for all people through providing personal care items.

In our pilot program, the Personal Essentials Ministry and Circle of Concern together learned a few lessons. First, we learned that our congregation loves donating toilet paper, and this happens to match with how toilet paper is the most requested item at Circle of Concern. Similarly, donations of shaving cream were low, but this matched with how shaving cream was least requested by Circle of Concern clients. Only 80 of the 600 families served by Circle of Concern each month partook of all five items we provided when given the option to; all other client families picked and chose according to their needs.

This was celebrated as it affirmed a recent change at Circle of Concern–beginning in September 2018, Circle of Concern moved to the

“choice” pantry model where clients are able to shop for their needs rather than receiving a pre-made box of food or toiletries. This change is critical as it helps restore dignity through creating an experience similar to that of an everyday shopping trip, rather than receiving a hand-out.

Altogether, Circle of Concern learned that their needs were lower than the amounts we had committed to provide, and we learned that some items were coming in more frequently than others. As such, we are moving towards continuing to collect toilet paper, shampoo, tampons, razors, and shaving cream, while only committing to providing the number of 3,600 rolls of toilet paper a month. Going forward, we will also be welcoming donations of laundry detergent and diapers size 5 and 6, as these are two personal essentials needs that are in high demand at Circle of Concern.

Physical donations can be brought to the new Personal Essentials Ministry donation bin in the main lobby, a gift created by Michael Smalley, a parent in our Circle of Friends Preschool.

Trivia Night 2019

$200.00 per table or $20.00 per ticket

Help support the youth center and have a blast! There will be 10 rounds of 10 questions each. Topics vary widely. Tables seat up to 10 people. Individuals can register as well for $20. Cash prize of $250.00.

Proceeds support the furnishings and AV equipment for the new Youth Center at Manchester UMC.

Bring your own food and beverages. Simple, dry snacks are provided.

Help Finish New Youth Center!

AV Equipment

Thanks to the generosity of many families, Manchester UMC was recently able to renovate much of its Youth Center and purchase new furniture to make it more modern, functional and attractive to young people in our community.

In order to be fully functional, we need to equip the Youth Center with audio, visual, media and band equipment by August 2019 so that youth can fully worship, learn, play and grow in this newly renovated space.

We’re almost to the finish line! As of June 25, 2019, Phase 1 AV priorities (see below) have been fully funded and we are in the process of getting them ready for the August kickoff of youth group.

PHASE 1: AV Priorities (Summary)

Total AV Expense = $15,129 (Fully Funded!)

As of July 14, 2019, approximately $2,188 in additional donations is still needed to fully fund phase 2 (below) of important AV needs.

Total Expense = $ 6,591* (phase 2)

* $4,403 has already been donated toward phase 2 AV expenses. This leaves a gap of $2,188

Donations made after January 24, 2019 may be applied to other Youth Center capital expenses (e.g. furniture, A/V, Band equipment, etc.) if ministry needs or costs change.

Room Request Form

Please submit a separate Room Request Form for each Manchester UMC approved event/activity. Because space at the church is in high-demand, you are encouraged to submit your room request as early as possible.

An email confirming your request will be sent after you submit the below form. The event/activity contact person will typically be contacted by the church office with one week of submitting the below request to advise what room has been reserved.

Important Notes:

  • Rooms can only be requested through December 31, 2019 at this time.
  • If your event is postponed or cancelled, please notify Sherri Estes as quickly as possible so we do not use resources to setup the room and so the space can be made available to other ministries.
  • There are no carry-over reservations from year to year.  All events/activities (including annual events/activities) must be officially rescheduled for each new year.
  • Our facilities team does their best to honor a group’s first or second choices for rooms. Just know that there are a lot of requests and sometimes this means an alternate room may be assigned to meet the needs of everyone.
